Candle Care! This time of year we all love to fill our home with scents and lighting. This makes us feel all warm and cozy as the nights get cooler and fall turns to winter. Personally I love candles! They create an ambiance of comfort. That being said I would like to share with you the best way to properly care for your candles. Get all the bang for your buck with these tips.
Never leave a candle burning unattended. Before lighting, place candle on a stable, non flammable surface, out of areas with a draft. Keep candles away from children, pets, and items that can catch fire.
Trim the wick! Keep your wick trimmed to 1/4 inch. Did you know we sell wick trimmers here at the store? When trimming a wick be sure the flame is extinguished. Trimmers will also prevent the wick from falling into the wax.
Melt the wax fully across. Fully melting will offer the best fragrance release. Burning your candle for no more than four hours is best practice. When you burn a candle for short periods and a full melt is not achieved it may cause, what is called, tunneling. When tunneling occurs you are losing a portion of your candles full potential. Burning long enough to melt the entire top surface will ensure an even burn all the way to the end.
Keeping your candle clean and free of debris is another way to keep a clean burning candle. Tips for a clean candle include not blowing out the flame. Use a candle snuffer or even a metal spoon will work. When you blow out the flame ashy debris spreads into the melted wax and may cause smoke. Wick trimmings and thick dust in the wick pool can catch fire. Cover candles when they are not in use and let them cool between burnings.
Finally when your candle is down to 1/2 inch of wax at the bottom it is time to throw it away. In addition should the container be damaged in any way you should go ahead and discard it.
