Spring has Sprung 2022

posted on March 15, 2022

Spring is popping up all around us. Hopefully we have had our last snowfall here in West Virginia. I have been seeing pictures of Easter Lilies coming up. What do you look forward to most for spring? I like spring cleaning and freshening up the look of my home. Also new spring and summer clothes are always fun! Check out below for this season’s new and upcoming home decor and clothes.

Who knew bees would make the cutest decorations? They fit for everything from “Bee Happy” on our T’s to valances, table top, wall, and porch/yard decor. We have some great options here at the store. You could add a small accent piece or go all out. There are even bee and sunflower “scrubbies” you can use on veggies or dishes. Adding to the whole ball of wax we have indoor/outdoor pillows, placemats, napkins, birdhouses, and trivets/coasters.

Spring Flowers is another favorite. While we do not add our florals to our website, we stock quite a bit in store. Yellows and blues are beautiful, bright colors. Garden flags, house flags, and mats would be another cheerful addition.

We really could present this whole blog in photographs. Of course, then we would have to change the photos weekly because our displays and merchandise change so quick. Hopefully you take the time to watch our Facebook Live videos. Even if you can’t watch it live go back for the replay. We always have fun showing our store and telling you folks what’s new!

With the boutique stocked in Simply Southern T’s and gifts, as well as, the cutest short bib overalls, and mixed material shacket you are sure to find something to love! Stock up for Easter baskets too.

Simply Southern totes make the perfect reusable Easter Baskets. There are pastel spring colors and these totes are great for everything! They wipe out easily or even spray out with a water hose. Take off to the pool, lake, beach, or keep for groceries, baby items, kids toys, soccer fields. You really can’t go wrong with one of these. These sell out fast!

Don’t forget Swan Creek coffee candles and new spring scents. Try something new this season. Candy Shop, French Lavender Lemonade, Fresh Strawberry, Garden Party, Mango & Peach Slices, Campfire Coffee, Spa Day, Wild Honeysuckle & Citrus, or Strawberry Basil & Tomato are some new scents to put on your list!

We look forward to seeing everyone this Spring 2022!

Dove’s Village look back on 2021

posted on December 29, 2021

Can you believe it’s time to welcome another year! While there are still many uncertainties in this ever changing world we are excited to Welcome 2022. We are so thankful for the year YOU our customers have given us. Everything we love to do here at Dove’s is all because of you. Let’s take a look back on 2021 to see what we’ve done.

If you go way back to the beginning of 2021 you’ll see all the fun we’ve been having. We had our Lucky Dove raffle. Where we raffled off one of our beautiful hand crafted furniture pieces. We were so excited for our Lucky Winner!

Lucky Dove Raffle 2021

New items started to arrive and we had a Live Facebook Video every Thursday at 6pm. We are always excited to show you all our new items. A West Virginia local Blacksmith crafted dinner bells, courtin’ candles, and key rings for us. West Virginia Lambros Pottery started coming in, as well as, The Old Village Roaster Coffees. Supporting local artists and businesses has become more important than ever and we are grateful to be part of that.

There were bees, lemons, flags, and all sorts of display changes. The Squeeze the Day Event was on May 1, 2021. This was the last Spring Showcase hosted by Mona of Pear Tree Arts and Gardens. It has been sad to see her leave the Village this year. Mona always brought a great showcase of artisans, we hope to be able to keep up with her tradition, and make some new ones along the way.

This New Website Launched! There is a lot to learn, but we will work hard everyday to bring you an appealing site. This site is for customers to get a feel for what Dove’s is all about. Hopefully that is what you see when you visit us online.

Our very own YOUnique Boutique has been bringing you the latest in fashion all year! From Simply Southern to Judy Blue Jeans you can always find something cute to add to your wardrobe. Offering you personal service and something to fit your style.

The Christmas in July 2021 Event was a great success! We had vendors set up and The Big Lebowlski food truck brought their awesome deliciousness. Hopefully we can have another for 2022.

After July it seems like we blinked and here we are at the end of the year. Fall items started to arrive and were being put out on display in a frenzy. Our Dove’s elves worked as hard as they could all year. Handbags, fall flags, Christmas flags, sweaters, Simply Southern, totes, and oh so many items!

Pear Tree Arts and Garden hosted their final Fall Showcase 2021. The whole village participated and The Big Lebowlski came back! After this big event we had fantastic news, Aurora Coffee and More joined the Village. What an exciting addition. Now you can stop by and pick up a coffee, shaved ice, or other beverage of choice and maybe even luck up on some delicious pastries.

Slippers, gnomes, Holiday Party Outfits, Christmas T’s, Christmas Decorations, Grinch Trees and more Facebook Live Videos on Thursdays. Next thing you know it was time for Christmas in Village 2021. This is an annual after hours event. All of our Hosts YOUnique Boutique, Aurora Coffee & More, Mountain State Log Homes, and Wild Mountain Soap Company look forward to this event. We appreciate everyone who came out to support our businesses.

We can’t forget to mention we work in the most beautiful place! Come see for yourself.

Cheers to all of our customers! None of this would be possible without your support. Your business is greatly appreciated. We cannot wait to see what 2022 has for us!

Measuring for Curtains

posted on October 13, 2021

A how-to on measuring curtains

Today I want to focus on measuring for curtains. I will be covering the types of window treatments we stock here at Dove’s. We have many different curtains to fit quite a style range. Today instead of focusing on style I would like to talk about curtains themselves. They provide so much for your space, choosing the right size for your look is the best place to start.

Think first, where will I be using this curtain? Do I want to cover my whole window or a portion? Will I need to close them for privacy? Then measure, how wide ( across) is my window? How long (top to bottom) is my window? Now that you have this information in hand you are ready!

Basic or standard valances are straight across. Dove’s standard valances measure 72”wide by 14” long. They generally have a rod pocket with a header at the top. You will want to at least double the size of your valance from your window measurement. Let’s say your window measures 63” wide and the valance you are looking at measures 72” wide, get two. This will give the valance plenty of gather. Hanging one 72” valance over a 63” wide span will only give 9” of gather, it will look too stretched out or flat on your window.

Lined basic or standard valances are also straight across, with a lining on the back. Some of these options measure 72” wide by 19” long. This lining provides a layer of protection from the sun. I especially recommend a lining if your window gets a lot of sun. The sun will fade the color of your curtains very quickly. There may be other reasons to go with lined, but we will talk about that later.

Lined layered valances are a dressed up version of the basic valances. These lined valances are usually scalloped or as we like to say here at the store they have a skirt underneath. The skirt matches the pattern of the valance but is either a solid or a ticking. This valance hangs longer than most basic valances.

Pictured here: Wicklow Check Black/Cream Lined Layered Valance – priced at $36.99

Basic swags give some length on the side of your window, leaving it open in the center. Essentially it swags or hangs down. These may also come lined or unlined. The styles we carry at Dove’s are two pieces that meet in the middle. The center matches its valance counterpart. I’ll go back to our example of a 63” wide window. To hang one swag on our example window, you would need one swag and one valance. This allows for the gather as well as leaving the center of the window opened. For two windows together there are two options. First is one rod across, hanging your window treatments as if they were one window. Second is two rods hanging your window treatments as two separate windows.

Pictured here: Farm Yard Swag – priced at $29.99

Both options work with all types of curtains we are talking about.
Tiers or cafe curtains are shorter, made to cover the bottom portion of your window. Dove’s basic tiers are generally available in 72” wide by 36” long pair, select patterns are available in 72” wide by 24” long pair. The 72” is total across, individually each tier piece is 36”. Tiers can be added for style as well as function for privacy. They can be opened and closed. As well as lined or unlined.

Short panels Dove’s carries measure 72” wide by 63” long and can be unlined and lined. Ours are sold in pairs, which means you get two panels (measuring 36” wide each piece) with matching fabric tie backs. Short panels may come right to the bottom of your window or hang below the window, this all depends on how long your window is. A window that measures longer than 63” will not work with this size, your panels will be shorter than your window and it will not have a finished look. These panels function for privacy or may be left tied back.

Pictured here: Burlap Dove Gray 63″ Panels – priced at $39.99

Long panels we stock in the store measure 72” wide by 84” long, most panels this length will be lined, but we do carry some unlined options. There are also 80” wide by 84” long options, all of these are lined. Long panels work well in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, over sliding glass doors, and more. These can also make your room look bigger by hanging your rod up above your windows, this will draw eyes up toward the ceiling and give the room a bigger feel, (although I might suggest lighter colors for this as well).

In closing I would like to invite you to the store. If you do not live close by we will help by phone or Facebook messaging. Bring your window measurements with you, we are here to help! Our display space is limited, please ask if you do not see what want. We may have it in stock or be able to order it for you. Your curtains are an investment. We want you find what you love and smile every time you look at your windows.

September 11th, 2001

posted on September 10, 2021

Today, we remember those who were killed on September 11th, 2001. Today, we honor those men and women, their families, and the emergency personnel on scene. Today, we remember as tragedy struck. Today, and everyday we will remember.

“On September 11th, 2001 at 8:45am an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. The 110ft skyscraper had been struck near the 80th floor, leaving a gaping, burning hole.

18 minutes after the first plane hit, a second Boeing 767 came into sight, and turned toward the South Tower, near the 60th floor.

The collision caused a massive explosion that showered burning debris over surrounding buildings and onto the streets below. It immediately became clear that America was under attack.”

As the rest of the world watched the Twin Towers fall, Washington, D.C was being attacked.  American Airlines Flight 77 circled over, and crashed into the West side of the Pentagon military headquarters. A portion of the building, which is the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense, collapsed, leaving everyone scared and heartbroken.

At 9 p.m., President George W. Bush delivered a televised address from the Oval Office, declaring, “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.”

We remember this tragic event, the day that left us all with heartache, but also truly united the American people.

Our reason for writing this blog, is to remember our fallen friends and family, to honor them, and to educate those who don’t know much about the 9/11 attacks. This world is busy, our lives are busy, but we will always stop for a moment and remember those who aren’t with us. We will always remember this day.

Since then, many candlelight vigils take place, a permanent memorial has been built, and a Tribute in Light is held on the anniversary.

See below for photos of the “Tribute in Light” by the Municipal Art Society of New York, and a permanent memorial, “Reflecting Absence,” by Michael Arad.
