Do you ask yourself if you need curtains hung in your home? Honestly that all depends on what you want. Curtains add a texture and coziness to your space with little effort. Simply layering a valance over your curtain panels or sheers in behind your panels will add color and depth to your window.
There are so many choices for curtains. Patterns or plain are both great either way. A general rule of thumb is either your curtains or walls should one shade lighter or darker than each other. I might suggest that you not stress over matching walls, sofas, or carpet exactly. When using a different color can add visual interest in the room and break up walls so the curtains won’t disappear.
As a standard your curtains should be hung four to six inches above the window frame. With the rod hung high it will make your window appear taller. All of this in turn can make your room appear larger as well. Remember when making your room appear larger you may want vertical stripes, light colors. or solid panels.
There is a difference between store bought panels and custom made drapes. Store bought panels are often not wide enough for the windows you are dressing. We suggest a minimum of doubling the width of your window. This will make your window treatments more full and keep them from looking skimpy or cheap. As an example if your window is 72 inches wide (across the top) we suggest you purchase a minimum of two pair of panels, or two valances ( if you’re only using toppers). This will give your curtains a nice full appearance. When the panels do not need to be closed for privacy you can purchase one pair of panels and layer two valances on a rod over the top, adding depth to the look.
